What is Metabolic Psychiatry?

Metabolic psychiatry is an emerging sub-specialty that bridges the gap between metabolic health and mental health to achieve optimal wellness. This approach aims to enhance inflammation control, the body’s homeostasis, and overall functioning.

Mental health is inherently tied to metabolic health, with mental disorders often viewed as metabolic disorders of the brain. Given the inextricable connection between the body and mind, treating metabolic disorders can significantly improve mental health.

Metabolic disorders encompass conditions such as pre-diabetes, insulin resistance, hypertension, high cholesterol, overweight, and obesity. Iatrogenic weight gain, which is weight gain caused by prescription medications and can increase the risk of metabolic syndrome can be addressed by applying metabolic psychiatry principles.
